01 Dec How do you make a resolution to lose weight?
It’s that time of year again. Resolutions abound, and though we argue that any time is a great time to improve your nutrition status and exercise habits, it’s inevitable that the New Year brings a little extra push of motivation. The psychology of “starting over” — a new year — drives the desire to make changes.
And, statistics don’t lie. Losing weight consistently lands in the top three New Year’s resolutions. The problem seems to be, though, to make sustainable lifestyle changes.
Why weight loss resolutions fail:
Most resolutions are actually quite realistic. They are achievable. That said, when people make their resolutions, they fail to come up with a real plan. This is where the resolution failure trap happens because there’s this big goal at the end of a long tunnel, and most people don’t really know how to map their way through that tunnel. A Forbes article states that 80% of people quit their resolutions by February. Yikes.
Are you gearing up to make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and feel healthier in 2024? Don’t go it alone!
Weight Loss Dietitian, NYC
Working with a dietitian to lose weight is a great weight to achieve sustainable weight loss. Receive nutrition coaching so you don’t feel overwhelmed, don’t get lost in the glut of information out there, and receive the support you need to stay on track and stay accountable for your goals.
What does a weight loss dietitian do?
As NYC dietitians, we love food and the incredible food traditions. New York is rich with so many different flavors and opportunities to explore. We do not promote cardboard diets that leave people hungry and unsatisfied. Food is celebration and life! We can help you map your way to achieving meaningful weight loss, giving you the strategies and information you need to succeed.
We will:
- Measure your resting metabolic rate. This will help us identify whether you have a fast or slow metabolism, and determine the calories you burn each day — on resting and exercise days — to reach and maintain your healthiest weight. We can also identify the minimum number of calories needed without slowing down your metabolism.
- Analyze your body composition to measure your body fat, muscle, and water levels.
- Help you improve your relationship with food and your body, ditching the all or nothing attitude. Food is celebration and tradition and nourishment and sustenance, not a punishment or reward.
- Empower you with the knowledge you need to choose the best foods for your wellness and weight loss goals. This includes coaching you for grocery shopping, tips for restaurant eating, and food label literacy.
- Help you identify food triggers and unhealthy eating behaviors. We don’t only focus on the WHAT, but as functional dietitians, we are going to zero-in on the WHY and HOW.
- Set realistic weight-loss and nutrition goals with you.
- Help you with meal planning, snacking, as well as supplement support.
How do I create a weight loss goal?
Be SMART – specific – measurable – achievable – realistic – timely:
Together, we will come up with SMART goals to support your weight loss resolution. These will be unique to you, your specific needs, diet plan, and goals. Here are some examples:
I will replace soda and sugary drinks with water during breakfast and lunch.
I will replace one simple carb with a vegetable during lunch and dinner.
I will walk after dinner (not measureable).
I will walk 30 minutes after dinner (measureable).
I will eat more vegetables (not measurable).
I will add two more vegetable portions to my meals during the day (measurable).
I will lose two pounds per month. (It’s measurable, specific, and has a reasonable timeframe)
I will go down one clothing size in three months. (Measureable, specific, and a reasonable timeframe)
