An eating disorder dietitian is a licensed professional with the training and certifications to work with patients with eating disorders and disordered eating. They have the unique qualifications to work with patients to improve their relationship with food and their bodies.
The key distinction between an eating disorder and disordered eating lies in how closely symptoms align with the American Psychiatric Association’s criteria. “Disordered eating” is a description, not a diagnosis. While some with disordered eating may meet the EDNOS criteria, it’s also possible to have disordered eating patterns that don’t fit current eating disorder diagnoses. Nonetheless, addressing eating concerns without a formal diagnosis is important, as they can develop into more severe disorders and pose health risks.
Eating disorders are grave, and often deadly, diseases associated with extreme alterations in eating behaviors and the thoughts and emotions related to food and body image. They are mental health illnesses. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder. Other eating disorders include bigorexia, diabulimia, orthorexia, and night eating. Many who suffer from eating disorders, or their loved ones, feel helpless and scared.
Up to 30 million Americans of all ages and genders suffer from eating disorders. 50% of 9-year-old girls and 80% of 10-year-old girls have already been on a “diet”. 90% of young women in college have used diet to control their weight and 22% reported they dieted “often” or “always.” 25% of college-aged women use bingeing and purging as a weight management technique. 10% to 15% of people with anorexia and bulimia are male. Men tend not to seek treatment because they perceive eating disorders as a female disease.
We are mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brothers, teachers, coaches and more. There is not one person whose life hasn’t been touched by eating disorders.
Here, at NYCNutritionist.net, we have the experience and credentials required to help patients who suffer from disordered eating and eating disorders. We believe in HAES (Health at Every Size), and we promote body diversity and health. Nutrition therapy, individualized with one of our experienced dietitian nutritionists, is a key component of healing.
The road to health and recovery involves a team: mental health professionals, primary care physicians, and family support. Additionally, nutritional counseling from a registered dietitian is an essential part of the team’s treatment.
Together, we will work to develop a nutrition plan and help you learn how to see food as nourishment, not as an enemy, friend, or something to control at all costs. Moreover, we will work with you on developing a positive body image, understanding body image distortion, and analyzing and reprogramming the relationships you have developed with food, nutrition, your body, and exercise. We include support and nutrition education for family members and caregivers on the journey to recovery, as eating disorders affect everyone.

Many claim to be a nutritionist. But only a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) meets rigorous academic requirements with clinical training, holding a degree from an accredited university. Our RDNs stay informed of guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to provide our patients with expert nutrition counseling.
