Feel energetic again, reach a healthy weight, optimize fertility, optimize thyroid health, and live your most vital life with guidance from a New York City RDN. Take control of your life and manage Hashimoto’s, Graves, and other thyroid conditions with dietary interventions.
Lank hair, feeling frumpy, tired, depressed, cold, and experiencing weight gain or loss, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping are just a few signs of a malfunctioning thyroid.
Our thyroid is the engine to our bodies. It produces the hormones that regulate the body’s energy use. This small, butterfly-shaped organ found at the front of the neck regulates heart, muscle, and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance.
Our thyroid is highly nutrient dependent. Poor nutrition and diet can not only prevent our thyroid from working well, but also interfere with thyroid medications. It often happens that our patients’ blood tests are perfect, yet they continue to feel like they’re running on zero. This is not “in your head.”
Thyroid health and diet are intricately linked, and you may have some dietary habits that interfere with the absorption of the thyroid hormone. Though your bloods show you’ve got enough, your body, at a cellular level, might not be absorbing them.
The most common thyroid disorders are:
Hypothyroidism: This occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones.
Hashimoto’s Disease is one of the main causes of hypothyroidism. It is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s white blood cells and antibodies mistakenly attack thyroid cells, leaving it damaged and unable to function at full speed. Hashimoto’s can progress over the years and cause chronic thyroid damage.
Graves Disease, too, is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s white blood cells and antibodies attack the thyroid, causing it to produce too much of the thyroid hormone. This leads to hyperthyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism is when the body releases too many hormones in the blood.
