What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are serious mental health illnesses, not just “lifestyle choices.” These conditions involve profound disruptions to eating behaviors, driven by complex emotions and body image distress. Whether you are navigating Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge-Eating Disorder, or less discussed conditions like Orthorexia or Diabulimia, the path to healing requires specialized, clinical support.

What is the difference between eating disorders and disordered eating?

The key distinction between an eating disorder and disordered eating lies in how closely symptoms align with the American Psychiatric Association’s criteria. “Disordered eating” is a description, not a diagnosis. While some with disordered eating may meet the EDNOS criteria, it’s also possible to have disordered eating patterns that don’t fit current eating disorder diagnoses. Nonetheless, addressing eating concerns without a formal diagnosis is important, as they can develop into more severe disorders and pose health risks.

Up to 30 million Americans of all ages and genders suffer from eating disorders. 50% of 9-year-old girls and 80% of 10-year-old girls have already been on a “diet”. 90% of young women in college have used diet to control their weight and 22% reported they dieted “often” or “always.” 25% of college-aged women use bingeing and purging as a weight management technique. 10% to 15% of people with anorexia and bulimia are male. Men tend not to seek treatment because they perceive eating disorders as a female disease.

We are mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brothers, teachers, coaches and more. There is not one person whose life hasn’t been touched by eating disorders.

Here, at NYCNutritionist.net, we have the experience and credentials required to help patients who suffer from disordered eating and eating disorders. We believe in HAES (Health at Every Size), and we promote body diversity and health. Nutrition therapy, individualized with one of our experienced dietitian nutritionists, is a key component of healing.

The road to health and recovery involves a team: mental health professionals, primary care physicians, and family support. Additionally, nutritional counseling from a registered dietitian is an essential part of the team’s treatment.

Together, we will work to develop a nutrition plan and help you learn how to see food as nourishment, not as an enemy, friend, or something to control at all costs. Moreover, we will work with you on developing a positive body image,  understanding body image distortion, and analyzing and reprogramming the relationships you have developed with food, nutrition, your body, and exercise. We include support and nutrition education for family members and caregivers on the journey to recovery, as eating disorders affect everyone.

Trusted NYC Registered Nutritionist Dietitians

As NYC-based Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, we believe that personalized nutrition is a fundamental human right. In a city that often demands perfection, we provide a sanctuary for healing. We believe that with specialized, evidence-based guidance, every individual can move beyond the distress of an eating disorder toward a life of sustainable wellness and food freedom.

We are ready to help you heal. Together, we will:

  • Establish a Clinical Safe Space: We provide a judgment-free environment to process food fears, body image distress, and complex eating patterns.

  • Prioritize Medical Stabilization: We focus on restorative health markers and metabolic recovery rather than restrictive “weight goals.”

  • Navigate Food Challenges: We provide hands-on support for reintroducing “fear foods” and breaking the cycle of restriction and binging.

  • Restore Biological Cues: We help you move away from rigid rules to reconnect with your body’s natural signals of hunger and fullness.

  • Identify Root Triggers: We work to uncover the emotional and environmental factors that drive disordered behaviors.

  • Implement Weight-Neutral Monitoring: When clinically necessary, we manage weight restoration or stabilization using a “blind weighing” approach to reduce anxiety and focus on health over numbers.

  • Deliver Functional Nutrition Education: We teach you the “why” behind your biology—explaining how your metabolism works and why your body requires specific nutrients to thrive.

  • Co-Create a Flexible Roadmap: Together, we develop a personalized meal support plan that evolves with your recovery, designed specifically for your  lifestyle.

Develop a healthy relationship with food and your body – experience recovery.

We work with patients to develop a better relationship with food and understand how nutrition affects every aspect our lives. We will empower you with the tools you need to:

Testimonials

Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

by – Liz Lane

Working with NY Nutrition Group was the best decision I ever made! Lisa Moskovitz is an expert in intuitive eating and eating disorders. She is truly the only person that has been able to help my eating disorder recovery. Lisa is very kind and knowledgeable! I highly recommend to anyone looking for support – Hope S.

  • I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!

by – Angelica Richie

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

by – Maria Toro Franco

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie
