Now is a great time to get involved in sports in New York City, as the city is bustling with activity and movement. Working with recreational athletes and clients interested in weight loss and weight maintenance is one of our favorite challenges. New York is home to recreational marathon runners, dancers, aerobics instructors, yoga gurus and more. New trends include everything from Zumba to Cross Fit, and a wave of youth fitness and triathlons. Many people believe that only professional athletes need a sports nutritionist. In fact, anyone who wants to enhance their athletic performance, whether they’re training for a color run, tough mudder, or first half-marathon post-pregnancy, can benefit from working with a sports nutritionist.
Athletes can expend thousands of calories during training and they need to be replaced in a timely manner to ensure optimal performance during training and competition. Athletes also lose large quantities of water and nutrients through perspiration that also must be replaced to prevent fatigue and muscle cramping. Just as different sports require different training programs, they also require individual nutritional needs. Knowing what to eat prior to and after training and before a competition can sometimes be confusing but is essential to success.
Sports nutrition is defined as “the study and practice of nutrition and diet as it relates to athletic performance.” (dictionary.com)
In other words, the way a sumo wrestler approaches nutrition is very different from a long-distance runner, a cyclist, a rock climber, a rugby player, or a boxer. Likewise, recreational athletes will approach nutrition from a very different angle than pro athletes.
Our team of NYC certified nutritionists works with recreational athletes and patients using sport to lose, gain, or maintain weight to assess nutritional needs based on their sport, energy expenditure and an evaluation of their current diet. We then use this information to create an eating plan that provides adequate carbohydrates, proteins and fats for optimal performance. We determine fluid needs and the types of drinks best suited for each athlete’s individual needs and will discuss the use of ergogenic aids and supplements and their impact on performance.

I had my first appointment with Dr Nikita Kapur today and she was wonderful. She communicated a ton of information, but broke things down in a way that was easy to understand and digest. I was recently diagnosed with SIBO (and have autoimmune diseases) and went to her to help with reintroduction of foods, but learned so much more. While I feel there is a long road ahead of me, I feel confident that with her guidance, I will get my gut health to a good place.
Nikita has been an instrumental guide in helping me navigate the recovery process after a SIBO diagnosis and working through the elimination/reintroduction diet. I know folks with IBS dealing with these elimination diets on their own and they all wish they could have access to a nutritionist throughout the process - I'm lucky to have been referred to Compass by my GI doc and lucky to have Nikita keeping me sane through the process.
