Maudsley Family-Based Treatment (FBT) in New York
Outpatient nutrition therapy to empower families (parents and caregivers) to take temporary control over refeeding their child/teen. Learn to separate your child from their illness. Get the support and coaching you need to refeed and help your child progress toward weight restoration and established eating behavior goals.
What is Maudsley Family-Based Treatment (FBT)?
This is considered one of the most effective, evidence-based treatment programs for children and teens who are diagnosed with bulimia or anorexia. It is an intensive outpatient therapy that involves parents and caregivers taking the lead on their child’s recovery — everything from refeeding to establishing healthy eating patterns and transitioning to psychologically safe places with food and their bodies.
This treatment program is hard work, and it requires time, dedication, constancy, a supportive healthcare team and family. It can be disruptive and exhausting and time-consuming.
It is also considered the gold standard treatment for teens and children who are struggling with anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders.
You are not alone. We are here to guide and support you while you support your child.

What are the Three Stages of FBT?
Stage 1: Stabilization & Nutritional Rehabilitation
In the early phase of recovery, re-establishing adequate nutrition and stopping dangerous behaviors — not analyzing why they started — is prioritized. This stage is hands-on and family-driven. Caregivers take the lead on meal planning, grocery shopping, and structured eating, with close guidance from our Registered Dietitians.
The focus here is purely physical: repairing the damage that restriction, purging, or exercise addiction has done to the body.
This stage is temporary, but it’s essential. The body cannot heal the mind until it’s out of crisis.
Stage 2: Gradual Return of Autonomy
Once weight is stable and harmful behaviors have waned, we begin handing control back to your adolescent — slowly, and in a developmentally appropriate way. This looks different for every teen.
An expert ED dietitian on our team works with both you and your child to agree on small steps: choosing one snack independently, planning a single meal, or eating out with friends without a parent present. The pace is determined by how well weight and behavior stability are maintained — not by a calendar.
This stage requires patience. Some teens move through it quickly; others need more time. We are here to support both you and your child through the transition, rebuilding trust around food one step at a time.
Stage 3: Healthy Identity & Relapse Prevention
With the body stable and eating patterns restored, the deeper work begins. This stage shifts from what your teen eats to how they relate to food, their body, and themselves.
We help adolescents separate their identity from their eating disorder — exploring their values, interests, and goals beyond weight or appearance. We also build a personalized relapse prevention plan, so they know exactly what to do if old thoughts or behaviors resurface.
This is also where we address the broader adolescent challenges that often get tangled up with disordered eating: peer pressure, social media literacy, body image resilience, sports performance pressure, and the transition to more independent living (like college or moving out).

FBT Support for Families: You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone
Watching your child struggle with an eating disorder is heartbreaking. You’re not failing — and you’re not meant to figure this out on your own.
Our Registered Dietitians specialize in Family-Based Treatment (FBT) and are here to support your family through every phase of recovery.
We start with a thorough assessment of your child’s nutritional status, medical needs, and the specific behaviors driving the disorder. From there, we guide you through the FBT model — not as a replacement for your FBT therapist, but as the nutrition experts on your team.
What Makes Our Support Different
- We coordinate with your full team — therapist, pediatrician, school — so everyone stays aligned, and nothing falls through the cracks.
- We meet you where you are. Virtual sessions work around your family’s schedule. No added commute to an already full week.
- We know FBT is hard. We don’t judge the messy moments. We give you practical tools to handle resistance, conflict, and the exhaustion that comes with this work.
Our goal is simple: back you up so you can back your child up — with less guesswork and more confidence.

What If I've Tried Other Treatment and It Didn't Work?
Not all treatments work for all people. And because you haven’t been successful, that doesn’t mean every treatment plan will be the same. Family-Based Treatment can be exhausting and isolating, and we want to help you. Treating an eating disorder is complex, and each patient is unique. A successful treatment plan:
- Needs to be evidence-based.
- Must prepare you for real-world triggers, giving you the coping skills to manage everything from restaurants and family meals to a stressful day.
- Must have a team that is resourceful in helping you navigate setbacks. There is no direct route to healing, and setbacks are going to happen.
- Includes your support network – spouses, parents, friends, and close loved ones. It takes a community to work through this.
- Prioritizes your health and well-being to ensure your child is getting the nutrients they need.
Will You Coordinate with My Therapist and Doctor?
Absolutely. Maudsley FBT involves coordinated care with your child’s pediatrician, therapist, and school. Together, we will work to build a plan to help you manage mealtime stress.
Do You Accept Insurance?
Absolutely! 95% of our patients pay little to nothing out-of-pocket. We also offer competitive private-pay rates for patients without insurance.
We will check your coverage for you and pursue authorization when appropriate.
