Certified Nutritionist vs Nutritionist: What’s the difference?
Some use the terms Certified Nutritionist and Nutritionist interchangeably. It’s important to understand that “anybody” can call themselves a nutritionist; whereas, a Certified Nutritionist is also called a Clinical Nutritionist, or Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN). They are professionals who have a four-year degree in clinical nutrition or a master’s degree in human nutrition, have completed at least 15 courses of core nutrition science, complete at least 900 hours of internship, and then sit for a national board exam.
To maintain certification, each CCN (Certified Clinical Nutritionist) must complete 40 hours of continued education courses every two years, attend two CCN annual Scientific Symposiums, and re-certify every five years.
Our team of Certified Nutritionists are qualified professionals. We work one-on-one with patients to develop diets based on how food is affecting you — tailoring nutrition interventions to fit your individual needs.
What, exactly, does a nutritionist do?
We practice a patient-centered approach, focusing on nutrition education, analyzing lifestyle and eating behaviors, as well as identifying deficiencies and excesses in your diet, in conjunction with your medical history. Together, we will develop a personalized nutrition plan that enables you to make more informed food choices, feel healthier, and live a more vibrant life.
We can’t wait to get started.

Here are some questions to ask when choosing a CCN:
- Where did you study nutrition science?
- Where did you do your internship?
- What professional organizations do you belong to?
- Why did you become a Certified Nutritionist?
- How will you approach implementing nutrition changes within my current lifestyle?
- What is your nutrition coaching style?
What to look for when choosing your NYC Certified Clinical Nutritionist:
- Reputation: look for reviews and contact clients to see how their experience has been.
- Coaching style: a CCN’s style should fit what you’re needing, as an individual, to be successful.
- Counseling skills: changing the relationship with food and eating can be pretty emotional. Your Certified Clinical Nutritionist should be able to help you manage the psychology of these changes.

Testimonials
Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie
