Reduce the risk of bone fractures and breaks, maintain bone density, and prevent further bone loss with an individualized diet plan with a nutritionist for osteoporosis in NYC.
Osteoporosis is the bone thief.
It is a metabolic bone disease that results in the deterioration of bone tissue which is referred to as low bone density or low bone mass called osteopenia. And it’s tricky, as you cannot feel your bones becoming weaker. It begins early in life and progresses slowly over time, oftentimes with no symptoms until you experience a fracture or break.
Though it affects men and women of all ages, those most at risk for osteoporosis are older Caucasian, Japanese and Chinese women, women who weigh less than 127 pounds, smokers and alcoholics. Moreover, certain medications and diseases can increase your risk of osteoporosis: women who take tamoxifen for breast cancer; people who take glucocorticoids (also called steroids or corticosteroids); people on anti-seizure medications; people who take excessive thyroid medication; and people who suffer from celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, lupus and diseases of the lungs, kidney and liver.
Understanding the cause of bone loss is fundamental to developing an individualized diet plan to help you maintain your bone density, prevent further bone loss, and address the root issue. Diet and exercise are important factors in preventing osteoporosis as well as stopping it from progressing.
An osteoporosis registered dietitian can provide you with dietary guidelines based on whether you have osteopenia (low bone mass) or osteoporosis. It’s possible with the right nutrition intervention, you can avoid taking medication. Becoming educated and working with a professional can help you to follow through with your nutrition program on your own.
Osteoporosis is not reversible. However, a diet plan in conjunction with strength training can prevent further bone loss. Battle the one thief with a solid nutrition plan.
