Nutrition Plans to Manage IBS – SIBO – Leaky Gut

Many patients struggle with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), SIBO, and other digestive issues. They often feel like their life revolves around searching for what is making them feel bad. This affects their social and family life, holidays, and simple lunches out with friends.

Here are some of the most common digestive disorders.

IBS: Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder that causes cramping and pain in the stomach and intestines. It’s also called “spastic colon.”

SIBO: Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth is a condition in which there’s an unusual increase in the bacterial population in the small intestine. It is often the result of the slowing of the passage of food and waste products through the digestive tract because of surgery or disease. This causes a breeding ground for bacteria to thrive.

Leaky Gut: Our bodies are pretty cool. We have an intestinal lining that covers over 4000 square feet of surface area. We all experience some level of leaky gut, as this lining isn’t impenetrable. That said, when our lining has cracks or holes, partially digested food particles, toxins, and bugs penetrate the lining and leak into our digestive tract. This can cause inflammation and changes in our intestinal microbiome.

Signs and Symptoms of Digestive Disorders:

Though some symptoms seem obvious, like constipation, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, weight fluctuations, and a chronic upset tummy, others might not be so. People with gut health problems might experience fatigue, migraines, skin problems, anxiety, bad breath, and weight fluctuations.

A change in eating behaviors, too, can result from gastrointestinal problems. It’s not uncommon for patients to begin to fear food — because of how bad they can feel. Another problem we see is patients trying to implement elimination diets on their own, which leaves them vulnerable to malnourishment and nutrient deficiencies. This, too, can lead to disordered eating.

Can a dietitian help with gut health?

Improving gut health requires both lifestyle and diet changes. We take a functional nutrition approach, and the first thing we want to do is determine WHY you’re feeling unwell. With a dietician, and through diagnostic tests, we can identify digestive disorders and food sensitivities, and develop a sustainable nutrition plan.

About 100 trillion bacteria live in our guts.

These trillions of bacteria create their own ecosystem called a microbiome, which has a macro-effect on our health. Executive editor of Harvard Women’s Health Watch, Kelly Bilodeau, writes, “Researchers are beginning to link these tiny creatures to all sorts of health conditions from obesity to neurodegenerative diseases.”

We do know that gut health is directly tied to mental health, weight maintenance, immunology, hormone health, and the prevention of chronic disease

What is The Gut Zoomer Test?

We encourage our patients to take the Gut Zoomer test, a stool test that assesses bacteria, yeast, viruses, and parasites in the gut microbiome. It also signals relevant digestive and inflammatory markers. The panel measures hundreds of species of microbes at once, providing the most comprehensive digestive health test on the market.

With the results from this test, we can get to the WHY behind your digestive health problems.

The Low FODMAP Diet:

One strategy to improve symptoms of IBS, SIBO, and other digestive disorders is to implement a low FODMAP diet.  This diet plan is not for all digestive disorders!

The low FODMAP diet is a structured, evidence-based way to identify food triggers, especially for people dealing with IBS and other gut-related conditions. It’s meant to be temporary and tailored, with the support of a dietitian nutritionist. Do not do this without expert medical guidance. A dietitian on our team will guide you through each phase, step by step, to make it both manageable and sustainable.

FODMAP is an acronym for: Fermentable Oligosaccharides Disaccharides Monosaccharides and Polyols. These are short-chain carbohydrates and found in many foods we eat. Foods that contain FODMAP can cause some people to feel bloated, gassy, and even experience abdominal cramping and diarrhea.

A low FODMAP diet consists of reducing the intake of foods containing FODMAP (not completely eliminating them), then, after a period of 6 – 8 weeks, gradually beginning to re-introduce certain FODMAP-containing foods into the diet.

An RDN from our team will work with you, and guide you step-by-step, in an individualized low FODMAP diet plan to ensure you receive the nutrients and support you need, implement the diet plan properly, and work through the FODMAP protocol. We then work with you to manage the reintroduction phase of some FODMAP-containing foods, always monitoring nutrient needs and making modifications when necessary. This diet plan might be the answer to help reduce symptoms and restore balance to your digestive system.

Our nutrition experts also consider lifestyle factors that might play into your IBS, SIBO, Leaky Gut, or other digestive issues like anxiety and stress, eating patterns, and food beliefs.

Work with one of our RDNs to get to the root of your gut issues. We go beyond symptom management—we help you build a healthier, more sustainable relationship with food that supports your overall well-being. Together, we will develop an individualized nutrition plan to help you feel better, one delicious bite at a time.

Our Clinical Strategy: Identifying the Root Cause

We don’t just treat symptoms; we investigate the “why” behind your digestive discomfort. Through our holistic and functional lens, we work together to:

  • Pin-point Trigger Foods: Using advanced insights to identify low, medium, and high-reactive foods specific to your biology.

  • Heal the Microbiota: Implement an individualized plan enriched with prebiotics and probiotics to promote a diverse and resilient gut microbiome.

  • Manage Symptoms: Develop immediate, practical strategies to handle uncomfortable flare-ups and regain daily comfort.

Our Philosophy: Empowerment over Restriction

Healing your gut shouldn’t mean losing your social life or fearing your plate. We empower you with the tools to:

  • Add, Don’t Subtract: Focus on diversifying your diet with nutrient-dense additions rather than focusing on what to take away.
  • Repair Your Relationship with Food: Identify and modify disordered eating behaviors that often mask themselves as “health” or “gut-healing” protocols.
  • Eat with Confidence: Become a food-label pro and learn to navigate family meals and NYC’s restaurant scene without anxiety.
  •
