20 Nov Nutritionist Covered by Insurance – NYC
At NYC Nutritionist, most of our patients pay nothing out-of-pocket for nutrition care.
What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?
Insurance covers nutrition therapy with a licensed healthcare provider. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist meets rigorous academic requirements with clinical training, holding a degree from an accredited university. Our RDNs stay informed of guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to provide our patients with expert nutrition counseling.
“Nutritionist” is not a professional title; therefore, insurance does not cover nutritionists, nutrition coaching, or nutrition coaches.
Does insurance cover nutrition services?
Because of the Affordable Care Act, insurance carriers now cover nutrition care. Millions of Americans who are at risk for, or suffering from, chronic disease now have access to affordable nutrition counseling.
Medical nutrition therapy encompasses a wide range of disease states and conditions, as well as preventive care.
- Diabetes and pre-diabetes
- Fatty Liver and Metabolic Syndrome
- GI Conditions (Digestive Health problems)
- PCOS
- Cardiovascular Health
- Eating Disorders (anorexia, bulimia, BED, orthorexia, ARFID, and disordered eating)
- Prenatal and postnatal nutrition care
- Kidney disease
- Obesity
- Geriatric nutrition care
- Weight management, including weight gain and weight restoration after surgery, an illness, and during eating disorder treatment.
We are in-network with most insurance plans. Keep in mind that not all plans are equal since nutrition is a specialty. Your plan may not cover nutrition counseling or medical nutrition therapy; moreover, the amount that you owe will depend on the specific health insurance plan you have.
If you have any issues getting in touch with your insurance or are not sure you have the correct information, contact us, and we can help verify coverage.
Telehealth Nutrition Care:
At NYC Nutritionist, we provide online medical nutrition therapy to patients from all over the city and state. With the government shutdown, people were concerned about whether Congress would extend telehealth options for patients with Medicare.
Exhale.
Congress has passed a continuing resolution that temporarily extends Medicare telehealth flexibilities, including Medical Nutrition Therapy, through January 30, 2026.
We will keep you updated with changes to insurance plans in the upcoming months.
