27 Jul What do online nutritionists do?
With the pandemic (it feels like it was ages ago!), so many things moved online, including nutrition services. As dietitian nutritionists in New York, we provide patients in New York and across the country with online nutrition therapy.
But is it the same thing?
Online Dietitian Nutritionist & Medical Nutrition Therapy –
Like In-Person (but with Pajama Pants)
When you make an appointment to get online nutrition therapy, you’re getting the same care and professional service you would get in person – from the comfort of your own home or office. As dietitians, we can provide almost every service online as we do in person. These services include:
Medical Nutrition Therapy:
If you are struggling with a chronic condition like diabetes, PCOS, GI issues, or food allergies, we use nutrition to support your treatment (this is something only RDNs are trained and licensed to do).
One-On-One Nutrition Coaching:
During our appointments, we will discuss your goals, your medical history, and your favorite foods and flavors. Based on your unique needs, a dietitian from our team can come up with an individualized nutrition plan to help you get where you want to go. We’re also here for ongoing support that can include follow-up appointments, support groups, and more.
Meal Planning:
We can help you with a meal plan that is developed for you, for your medical needs, and to help you reach your wellness and weight loss goals. We love great food and flavors! Don’t despair because a dietitian on our team will make things simple. It’s all about moderation and modification.
What are the benefits of online nutrition counseling?
- Convenience and flexibility: Save time commuting to your nutrition appointment. You can schedule an appointment to fit into any moment of your day. At NYC Nutritionist, we have dietitians available from early morning to late evening, even on Saturdays.
- Save money: Save money on gas, buses, and taxis.
- Get comfortable: Feel comfortable talking openly and candidly to your personal dietitian from your home, your office – wherever you feel best.
- Covered by insurance: Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, nutrition care is covered. This also includes online and telehealth nutrition appointments!
What should you ask an online nutritionist?
Again, influencers and “nutrition experts” abound. Before working with someone online, ask for their credentials. Here are some common credentials that support expert nutrition care:
RDN: Registered Dietitian Nutritionist – MS: Masters of Science – MHS: Masters of Health Sciences – CDN: Certified Dietitian Nutritionist – CNSC: Certified Nutrition Support Clinician – LDN: Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist – MSN: Master of Science in Nursing – APRN: Advance Practice Registered Nurse – FNP-BC: Family Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified – DNP: Doctor of Nursing Practice – LCSW: Licensed Clinical Social Worker
What services aren’t included in online nutrition therapy?
There are a couple of nutrition services we provide that still require you to visit one of our New York City offices. These services include:
Online nutritionists can be a game changer, especially if you’re busy, remote, or just prefer doing things from your own space. Whether you want help with meal planning, emotional eating, or a medical diagnosis, virtual nutrition support can be just as personal and effective as in-person (without the traffic and waiting rooms).
