What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and nutritionist?
“All registered dietitians are nutritionists but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians.”
A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a professional that has earned a bachelor’s degree approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. An RDN must complete an accredited, supervised practicum at a healthcare facility, community agency, or foodservice corporation. After earning a bachelor’s degree and completing their practicum, to earn the RDN title, a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration must be passed. Additionally, ongoing education is mandatory to maintain this title.
As of 2024, anyone who wants to be an RDN must have a master’s degree in an approved field (like food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry).
Registered Dietitians not only play an important role in helping people achieve their optimal health through nutrition, they also are key players in terms of public health, shaping families’ and communities’ food choices.
On the other hand, anybody can call themselves a “nutritionist” — whether they’ve completed an online course or attended a weekend conference. Nutritionists, who do not go through the rigorous coursework and requirements to achieve an RDN, are often free from government regulation. Though well-intentioned, many nutritionists might fall into fads and pop culture tendencies, quick-fixes which don’t create sustainable, meaningful lifestyle changes.
When looking for the right nutrition therapy for your needs — medical and health — make sure you ask for credentials. We look forward to working with you.

As NYC Certified Nutritionists and Registered Dietitians, we believe that good nutrition is a human right, fundamental to health, and everyone should have access to the best possible care and information. Your personal RDN and nutrition consultant will analyze your nutritional deficiencies and excesses, dietary patterns, medical history and supplements so they can develop an individualized, sustainable nutrition plan.
Here are some questions to ask when choosing a RDN:
- What did you receive your bachelor’s degree in?
- Where did you do your practicum?
- What professional organizations do you belong to?
- Why did you become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist?
- How will you approach implementing nutrition changes within my current lifestyle?
- What is your nutrition coaching style
What to look for when choosing your NYC Registered Dietitian Nutritionist:
Choosing the right RDN to work with makes all the difference. Take the time to look into these three key areas so you have the best nutrition coach to help you reach your goals.
- Reputation: look for reviews, ask about certifications, degrees, specializations, and continued education.
- Coaching style: a RDN’s style should fit what you’re needing, as an individual, to be successful.
- Counseling skills: changing the relationship with food and eating can be pretty emotional. Your Registered Dietitian Nutritionist should be able to help you manage the psychology of these changes.

Testimonials
Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie
