What is bulimia?
Bulimia nervosa is a mental health and physical disorder, catalogued in the DSM-5 (DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS). It is characterized by recurring episodes of consuming large amounts of food within a short timeframe followed by purging behaviors aimed at eliminating calories. The purging behaviors include self-induced vomiting, compulsive exercising, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, insulin, and/or diet pills.
Bulimia nervosa is a serious, life-threatening condition and can result in medical and psychological complications.
What causes bulimia nervosa?
Bulimia isn’t caused by just one thing — and it is never your fault. A mix of psychological factors, genetic predisposition, and co-occurring mental health conditions can all increase vulnerability, often long before any behaviors start. Other causes can include social pressure, cultural norms, and participating in activities that prioritize specific body shapes or appearances. Understanding this helps us approach healing with compassion instead of blame.
Bulimia does not discriminate. It affects folx of all ages, genders, occupations, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, body shape, and size.

What is the difference between anorexia nervosa and bulimia?
Both anorexia nervosa and bulimia are characterized by a person’s drive for thinness and disturbances in eating behaviors. The main difference between anorexia and bulimia is body weight and the principal eating pattern. Anorexia nervosa is a syndrome of self-starvation involving significant weight loss of 15 percent or more of ideal body weight. Patients with bulimia nervosa experience repeated bouts of binging and purging (typically 3 or more a week) and are often at a “normal” weight or above average weight.
How is bulimia diagnosed?
Please note: eating disorders cannot be self-diagnosed. You must reach out to a medical professional. Your primary care physician will likely ask you about your eating habits and patterns, and they might want to weigh you. You can ask them not to tell you your weight.
They will then refer you to a team of eating disorder specialists.
Bulimia can go undiagnosed because people with this condition can be of any weight and size, may not display any other physical indicators of the sickness, and often hide their eating behaviors. The sooner you reach out for help, the sooner you can achieve recovery. You are not “not sick enough” to deserve help.
How Do Dietitian Nutritionists Help Someone Struggling with Bulimia?
Phase 1 — Stabilization & Medical Safety
Recovery from bulimia starts with establishing physical and emotional stability. This phase focuses on normalizing eating patterns at a safe, monitored pace — addressing electrolyte imbalances, esophageal irritation, dental concerns, and the metabolic effects of the binge-purge cycle. The goal is not dietary perfection; it is keeping you medically stable so the deeper work can follow. Frequent check-ins, lab monitoring, and close coordination with your medical team ensure this phase is both gentle and secure.
Phase 2 — Nutritional Rehabilitation & Refeeding
Once medical stability is established, the focus shifts to breaking the binge-purge cycle by rebuilding a sustainable relationship with food. This phase normalizes meal patterns — regular, adequate eating is the single most powerful tool for reducing binge urges — while gently challenging the all-or-nothing rules that keep the cycle going. It’s not about a prescriptive meal plan; it’s about re-learning hunger and fullness cues, reducing the shame attached to eating, and proving to your brain that food can be trusted again. Progress is gradual, non-judgmental, and rooted in consistency — not perfection.
Phase 3 — Normalization & Relapse Prevention
The final phase is about reclaiming a full life beyond the eating disorder. Here we work on flexible, intuitive eating patterns, maintaining recovery in social and stressful situations, and building coping tools for the inevitable hard days. Relapse prevention isn’t about being “cured” — it’s about having a clear plan for wobbles before they become slides. The goal is to reach a point where food and body concerns take up a normal, small amount of mental space rather than running the show.

What If I've Tried Other Treatments and They Didn't Work?
Not all treatments work for all people. And because you haven’t been successful, that doesn’t mean every treatment plan will be the same. Bulimia is a life-threatening condition, and we want to help you. Treating an eating disorder is complex, and each patient is unique. A successful treatment plan:
- Needs to be evidence-based.
- Must prepare you for real-world triggers, giving you the coping skills to manage everything from restaurants and family meals to a stressful day.
- Must have a team that is resourceful in helping you navigate setbacks. There is not direct route to healing, and setbacks are going to happen.
- Includes your support network – spouses, parents, friends, and close loved ones. It takes a community to work through this.
Will You Coordinate with My Therapist and Doctor?
Absolutely. The most successful outpatient treatment for anorexia involves coordinated care Together, we work to build a plan to help you begin to heal.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
There is no magic timeline for recovery. For some patients, it might take months. Others can take years. Setbacks and relapses tend to be the rule, not the exception. With the right team and support, however, you can overcome anorexia and live a healthy life.
NEDA discusses the three broad areas of recovery: physical, behavioral, and psychological. They build on one another and can take considerable time. Don’t be discouraged. The day you start (today) is a day closer to experiencing food and body image distress freedom.
Do You Accept Insurance?
Absolutely! 95% of our patients pay little to nothing out-of-pocket. We also offer competitive private-pay rates for patients without insurance.
We will check your coverage for you and pursue it when appropriate.
