What is ARFID?
ARFID is a mental health disorder, catalogued in the DSM-5 (DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS). It is characterized by a person limiting the quantity or variety of food consumed. As opposed to other eating disorders, food avoidance isn’t because of body image issues or distress about body weight. Selective eating for those with ARFID is due to lack of interest in eating, sensory sensitivities, and fear aversion — the fear of choking or vomiting.
ARFID is a serious condition and can result in medical and psychological complications.
What is the difference between picky eating and ARFID?
Almost every child on this planet goes through a “beige period”. And many parents and caregivers struggle with mealtime. The big difference between picky eaters and ARFID is that picky eaters still eat. Children with ARFID would rather be uncomfortably hungry than face their plate. And as opposed to children with ARFID, picky eaters, when exposed to foods repeatedly, eventually start to eat them.
By working with a dietitian on our team, we provide you with evidence-based feeding therapy, giving you the tools you need to manage ARFID (and picky eating, if that’s the case) and help your child thrive.

- Being very tired and weak, dizzy or fainting
- Stomach cramps, other non-specific gastrointestinal complaints (constipation, acid reflux, etc.)

Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms:

- Fears of choking or vomiting

ARFID Treatment with NYC Dietitians
Feeding Support for Caregivers: You Don’t Have to Navigate ARFID Alone
As a caregiver, watching your child struggle with food can feel isolating and exhausting. You’re not alone — and you’re not doing anything wrong. Our Registered Dietitians specialize in ARFID and are here to support both you and your child through every step of feeding recovery.
We start with a thorough assessment to understand your child’s specific aversions, sensory sensitivities, and nutritional needs. From there, we build a personalized plan that meets them where they are — no force, no pressure, no mealtime battles.
We’ll work together to:
- Expand food variety gently — using exposure-based strategies that respect your child’s comfort zone while slowly broadening what feels safe.
- Address sensory and texture sensitivities — with practical, hands-on guidance tailored to how your child experiences food.
- Create calm mealtime routines — establishing regular eating patterns that reduce anxiety for everyone at the table.
- Give you the tools and language — to manage food refusal, handle anxiety around eating, and respond in ways that build trust rather than resistance.
- Involve the whole family — because a positive food environment at home is one of the strongest predictors of progress. We help siblings, partners, and extended family get on the same page.
We coordinate closely with your child’s pediatrician, therapist, and school team to ensure consistent, wraparound support. Regular check-ins let us adjust the plan as your child grows and changes.
Our goal is simple: expand what feels possible around food, reduce mealtime stress, and help your child — and you — find peace at the table.

What If I've Tried Other Treatment and It Didn't Work?
Not all treatments work for all people. And because you haven’t been successful, that doesn’t mean every treatment plan will be the same. ARFID can be isolating, and we want to help you. Treating an eating disorder is complex, and each patient is unique. A successful treatment plan:
- Needs to be evidence-based.
- Must prepare you for real-world triggers, giving you the coping skills to manage everything from restaurants and family meals to a stressful day.
- Must have a team that is resourceful in helping you navigate setbacks. There is no direct route to healing, and setbacks are going to happen.
- Includes your support network – spouses, parents, friends, and close loved ones. It takes a community to work through this.
- Prioritizes your health and well-being, to ensure you (or your child) are getting the nutrients you need.
Will You Coordinate with My Therapist and Doctor?
Absolutely. The most successful treatment for ARFID involves coordinated care with your child’s pediatrician, therapist, and school. Together, we will work to build a plan to help you manage mealtime stress.
Can you recover from ARFID?
Yes, you can. Recovery means you, your child, or your loved one is getting adequate nutrition and has reduced anxiety and stress around mealtime and even in social situations that involve food.
It doesn’t necessarily mean someone with ARFID will become an adventurous eater.
There is no magic timeline for recovery. For some patients, it might take months. Others can take years. Setbacks and relapses tend to be the rule, not the exception. With the right team and support, however, you can overcome ARFID and live a healthy life.
Do You Accept Insurance?
Absolutely! 95% of our patients pay little to nothing out-of-pocket. We also offer competitive private-pay rates for patients without insurance.
We will check your coverage for you and pursue authorization when appropriate.
