Learn to manage performance pressure and body image expectations. Receive guidance for healthy weight restoration. Improve recovery after performance. Build healthy coping skills to manage emotions, anxiety, and mood. Restore your relationship with food and body.

What is athlete-specific eating disorder treatment?

Our outpatient eating disorder treatment program is designed for athletes who are struggling with anorexia, bulimia, BED, orthorexia, OSFED, and disordered eating. Together, we work to:

  • Restore adequate energy availability
  • Normalize eating patterns
  • Reframe food as fuel
  • Provide comprehensive care with your team of healthcare professionals, coaches, and family
  • Support physical and emotional healing, helping each athlete return to their sport safely

Athletes are vulnerable to developing disordered eating behaviors because of the unique intersection between sport, body shape, nutrition, and exercise.

Sports & Eating Disorders

Eating disorders don’t discriminate. Nevertheless, female athletes are at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder than male athetes.  Moreover,  athletes tend to be at a greater risk of having an eating disorder if they play sports that focus on personal performance, appearance, diet, and weight requirements. These sports include:

  • Swimming and diving
  • Bodybuilding
  • Wrestling
  • Gymnastics
  • Running
  • Dancing
  • Figure skating
  • Rowing (crew)
  • Beach volleyball

Why Athletes in NYC Face Unique Challenges

New York City’s competitive athletic culture — from Division I college sports to professional teams, competitive CrossFit, marathon training, and performing arts — often normalizes relentless discipline around food and body image. The pressure to be leaner, lighter, or stronger can blur the line between dedication and disorder.

Online nutrition therapy makes it easier than ever to get specialized care from a dietitian who understands both sports nutrition and eating disorders, without adding another commute to your already packed schedule. Whether you’re training out of a gym in Brooklyn, a studio in Midtown, or a field house upstate, we meet you where you are — virtually, with flexible hours built around your training and competition calendar.

You Don’t Have to Navigate Recovery Alone

As an athlete, your body is your instrument. When your relationship with food becomes complicated — whether through restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, or compulsive exercise — it doesn’t just affect your health. It affects your performance, your recovery, and your sense of self. You’re not alone, and you’re not broken. Our Registered Dietitians specialize in eating disorder treatment for athletes and are here to support you every step of the way.

We start with a thorough assessment to understand your sport, your training load, your nutrition history, and the specific beliefs or pressures that may be driving disordered eating patterns. From there, we build a personalized plan that honors your athletic goals while putting your health and recovery first — no guilt, no rigid meal plans, no one-size-fits-all nutrition therapy.

FAQs About Treatment for Athletes with Eating Disorders with Expert New York Dietitians:

What If I've Tried Other Treatment and It Didn't Work?

Not all treatments work for all people. And because you haven’t been successful, that doesn’t mean every treatment plan will be the same. Dealing with an eating disorder can be isolating, and we want to help you. Treating an eating disorder is complex, and each patient is unique. A successful treatment plan:

  • Needs to be evidence-based.
  • Must prepare you for real-world triggers, giving you the coping skills to manage sport-specific pressures — everything from performance to body image expectations.
  • Must have a team that is resourceful in helping you navigate setbacks. There is no direct route to healing, and setbacks are going to happen.
  • Includes your support network – spouses, parents, friends, your coaches, and close loved ones. It takes a community to work through this.
  • Prioritizes your health and well-being to ensure you are getting the nutrients you need.

Absolutely. The most successful treatment for eating disorders in sport involves coordinated care with your coach, physician, therapist, and anyone else on your team. Together, we will work to build a plan to help you heal.

Yes, you can. It takes time, work, and evidence-based care. There is no magic timeline for recovery. For some patients, it might take months. Others can take years. Setbacks and relapses tend to be the rule, not the exception. With the right team and support, however, you can overcome anorexia, bulimia, osfed, orthorexia, and disordered eating and continue to compete in your sport.

Absolutely! 95% of our patients pay little to nothing out-of-pocket. We also offer competitive private-pay rates for patients without insurance.

We will check your coverage for you and pursue authorization when appropriate.

You’ve already taken the first step by reading this page. Now, all you have to do is contact us to schedule a free 15- minute consultation. You are not alone.
