NYC Autism Spectrum Dietitian

Expert NYC Registered Dietitian Nutritionists can help with food therapy for selective eaters.  Identify nutritional risks. Analyze and identify needs for supplements. Identify unhealthy eating behaviors. Identify medication interactions. Develop strategies to guide you to include a greater variety of foods in your diet. Coach caregivers on food-related coping mechanisms.

Autism Nutritionist in New York & Manhattan:

Children, adolescents, and adults with autism are higher at risk for feeding problems and have a much narrower range of foods than those without autism. Moreover, people with ASD may experience repetitive behaviors and restricted interests, which can spill over into how they experience food. This can lead to nutritional deficiencies, weight gain, weight loss, and constipation, among other nutrition problems, adding another layer of complication to an already complex disorder.

It is a common misconception that picky eating is just a “phase” for children on the spectrum. In reality, these habits often persist into adulthood without professional intervention. A dietitian provides the tools to make these changes sustainable at any age.

We will analyze nutritional deficiencies and excesses, dietary patterns, medical history, and medications so you can begin to introduce new foods into your or your loved one’s diet, break unhealthy dietary habits, and help you establish habits to live a healthier, more vital life. We can help patients and their families achieve a healthier, more balanced life.

How can a dietitian help someone with autism?

As NYC Nutritionists and Registered Dietitians, we work with patients and caregivers to better nourish patients with autism and develop a healthier relationship with food. Nutritional therapy for ASD can help not only patients but also caregivers.

For individuals with autism (ASD), food is often about more than just hunger—it’s about sensory processing, routine, and comfort. An RDN acts as a bridge between nutritional needs and sensory boundaries.

Here is how a dietitian provides specialized support for both children and adults:

  • Managing Sensory Aversions: Dietitians help navigate “beige diets” or sensitivities to specific textures, smells, and temperatures. They use techniques like food chaining to introduce new foods that share similar qualities to current favorites.

  • Expanding Food Repertoires: Through food therapy, an RDN introduces a variety of volumes and flavors in a low-pressure way, helping “picky eaters” gradually accept new food groups.

  • Addressing GI Issues: Since gastrointestinal distress is common in the ASD community, a dietitian can identify food sensitivities or suggest fiber and probiotic adjustments to improve gut health and comfort.

  • Correcting Nutrient Deficiencies: For those with highly restrictive diets, an RDN monitors for “hidden” deficiencies (like Iron, Zinc, or Vitamin D) and recommends targeted supplementation or fortified foods.

  • Building Mealtime Routines: They provide behavioral strategies to reduce mealtime anxiety, helping families create a predictable and calm environment that encourages eating.

  • Supporting Weight & Metabolic Health: Some medications used to manage ASD symptoms can affect appetite or weight. A dietitian monitors these trends to ensure the body remains balanced and healthy.

Testimonials

Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

Working with NY Nutrition Group was the best decision I ever made! Lisa Moskovitz is an expert in intuitive eating and eating disorders. She is truly the only person that has been able to help my eating disorder recovery. Lisa is very kind and knowledgeable! I highly recommend to anyone looking for support – Hope S.

  • I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie
