Why see a pediatric nutritionist?

Child nutrition isn’t only about improving the health of an individual child. It’s also about the well-being of families, communities, and even the nation. Child nutrition has a huge impact on a country’s overall health, levels of disease, education attainment, and even income. Healthy prenatal, baby, toddler, child, and adolescent nutrition directly affects how our children perform in school and life.

However, before we save the world with a healthy breakfast, we can work to save your family’s mealtimes. Dinnertime can be a battle time in many homes. Developing healthy eating habits from an early age, though, doesn’t have to be complicated.

When should you see a child dietitian?

  • Food allergy support
  • Breastfeeding and infant nutrition
  • Improving eating behaviors
  • Managing picky eating and ARFID
  • Managing medical conditions like diabetes, Celiac disease, and Crohn’s Disease
  • Identifying disordered eating behaviors
  • The prevention and treatment of eating disorders

Can a nutritionist help a picky eater?

It’s important to understand the science. Newborns have 30,000 tastebuds. By the time we’re adults, those tastebuds have been whittled down to 1/3 of that amount. It’s not a wonder newborn food is generally bland. Moreover, it seems that we’re born with a genetic predisposition to reject sour and bitter foods. The battle of kids and Brussels sprouts goes beyond simple stubbornness. They’re more likely to taste bitter at a higher intensity.

Does this mean we’re destined to feed our kids bland pasta and bananas?

Do not despair! Many children go through a beige period. For picky eaters, our pediatric nutritionists can give families strategies to introduce more foods without causing anxiety. Likewise, our expert dietitians help with meal planning to ensure your little ones are getting all the nutrients they need.

Early Feeding Support

Breastfeeding, introducing foods into your baby’s diet, weaning from the bottle — all of these can feel like monumental tasks for parents. They can be overwhelming. With the support of a pediatric dietitian, you can get the tools you need to lessen the stress of these new and exciting phases.

New York City Expert Child Nutritionists

At nycnutritionist.net, we believe that expert nutritional care is a fundamental right. What sets us apart from other practices is our dual-approach: we offer the high-touch experience of in-person NYC nutrition therapy at our local clinic, combined with the flexibility of online nutrition counseling for busy New Yorkers.

Whether you meet us in the city or from the comfort of your home, you are working with a nourish dietitian—a specialist dedicated to feeding the whole person, not just calculating calories.

Why Choose nycnutritionist.net?

Many of us are parents ourselves. We understand the unique chaos of raising healthy eaters in Manhattan or Brooklyn. We, too, detest the “children’s menu” and the struggle of picky eating. As your personal registered dietitian and nutrition consultant, we provide a level of individualized care that goes beyond a standard meal plan.

We analyze your child’s nutritional deficiencies, dietary patterns, medical history, and supplement needs to create a roadmap that actually works for your lifestyle. Together, we can:

  • Empower Parents as Role Models: Build a positive, stress-free relationship with food that starts with you.
  • Diversify the Family Table: Master strategies to introduce a wide variety of flavors and textures, making family meals a cornerstone of your child’s academic success and emotional health.
  • Pinpoint Triggers: Scientifically identify food sensitivities and inflammatory triggers that affect your child’s mood and physical health.
  • Modify Challenging Behaviors: Develop clinical strategies to transition away from unhealthy eating habits and avoid the dreaded “toddler tantrums” at mealtime.
  • Promote Body Neutrality: Challenge unhealthy ideas about body image early on, helping your child grow with confidence and respect for their body.
  • Bridge the Gap: Use our  expertise to ensure that “healthy eating” feels like a natural part of your family’s identity, not a chore.

How do you feed a child with special needs?

A normal part of child development is to go through a picky eater phase. Picky, though, can turn problematic. Some children experience eating disorders that require consistent support from a pediatric dietitian nutritionist.

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and PANDAS/PANS (infection-induced autoimmune conditions),  can cause OCD and disordered eating.  Seek out early treatment so you and your child can get the tools to manage these eating disorders. These disorders require support from a comprehensive team of medical professionals including a child dietitian, pediatrician, and pediatric therapist.

Likewise, children who have ADHD or an Autism Spectrum Disorder may show signs of disordered eating behaviors. Working with a pediatric dietitian can help identify nutrient deficiencies, give you and your family the tools you need to improve eating behaviors and help everyone experience stress-free meals.

In our practice, we support families by helping babies, toddlers, children, and teens modify unhealthy eating behaviors, become more adventurous in their food choices, understand the basis of nutrition and balance, and become autonomous in their eating.

Moreover, developing a healthy relationship with food and high body self-esteem can change the way we live our lives.

We look forward to working with you and your family.

Testimonials

Loving my appointments with NY Nutrition Group. They take a wholistic approach to your nutrition and health, instead of just telling you what food groups to put on your plate or to simply cut out entire foods. I better understand how food works in my body in coordination with activity, sleep, mental health and overall health and wellness. I’m so glad I found them. They are helping me heal and improve my relationship with food and my body

Working with NY Nutrition Group was the best decision I ever made! Lisa Moskovitz is an expert in intuitive eating and eating disorders. She is truly the only person that has been able to help my eating disorder recovery. Lisa is very kind and knowledgeable! I highly recommend to anyone looking for support – Hope S.

  • I had the pleasure of working with Cassie Steinberg, Registered Dietitian over a period of 6 months. We met weekly to come up with personal health habits and fun meal ideas. What began as me wanting to lose some weight really ended up becoming a process of self-love and creating daily eating habits I could live with long-term. Cassie was creative and kind. She helped me in so many ways to accept the body I have and to nourish it daily. I highly recommend her as a Dietitian and body image guru

Have been working with Lisa for 9 months and am very pleased with the experience. I’ve seen progress toward my goals, but more importantly, the way that Lisa frames progress is holistic, balanced, and not overly obsessed with the scale. I’m grateful to have someone to share my stressors and disappointments through the process who has the knowledge and perspective to help assuage them. I’ve never once felt like I was being pushed into unsustainable habits or behaviors that are isolating. A great person to add to your care team if you want to build a healthy, realistic relationship with food and your body!

by – Angelica Richie

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeanne for a couple of months now and I’ve never felt better. Since I first started working with her she listened to all my goals and always gave me the best guidance and recommendations to meet my goals. I’ve noticed that I make wiser nutrition decisions since working with her and value the sessions we have

by – Maria Toro Franco

I’ve had the pleasure of working with two outstanding nutritionists. My former nutritionist left during COVID. Since then, I’ve been working with Julia DiPietrantonio. Julia is culturally competent, which is very important to me … If you’re looking to gain confidence not just a sense of control over your relationship with food, Julia is a great partner. I really appreciate NYNG, and I hope they continue to see cultural competency as a key pillar of their platform – Zahra Marie
